Silent Night: What a viral beauty/bio hack taught me.
Unless you’ve been under a rock, or off social media entirely, you’ve probably heard of the trend of mouth taping.
I decided I needed to investigate. I asked my dental hygienist. I asked my doctor. I researched. Then, finally, I tried it myself.
The results are in: it’s actually a really good thing.
Mouth taping is meant to encourage nasal breathing, which supports better sleep, clearer skin, better oral hygiene and improved oxygen flow. On paper, it’s wellness science. In practice, it’s humbling. You end the night unable to speak, an act that feels simple until you realize how rare it is to end a day wordless.
And, because I can’t help myself, I’ve tried them all.
Mintier makes a green barely-there version that is hypo allergenic and latex free. The Skinny Confidential took it to the beauty aisle with the chicest pastel-pink pieces imaginable that store in a bougie bedside coffret. ZZZ Mouth Tape is beard friendly if your hubby wants to join in. And yes, you can also cut a slit and use plain old ordinary scar tape (but it’s not as much fun).
A small piece of advice: wait at least 15 minutes after applying your nighttime skincare before you tape. If you do it too soon, those rich creams and serums can make the tape slide right off. Let everything absorb, then press it down and exhale through your nose.
And here’s the part that fascinated me most: when you breathe through your nose, when your mouth is shut, your body relaxes. The air is filtered, warmed, and humidified before it reaches your lungs. It balances oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, calms the nervous system, and even reduces cortisol. Your whole body interprets it as safety and as peace.
At first, it felt restrictive and off. It took me some getting used to and a few nights to relax into it. But then it felt like revelation.
I began to crave the stillness, and real restorative sleep.
Scripture supports this idea repeatedly.
“I stand silently before the Lord, waiting for Him to rescue me. For salvation comes from Him alone.” Psalm 62:1
“Stand silent! Know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation in the world!” Psalm 46:10
“Quietness and confidence will reign forevermore.” Isaiah 32:17
Silence it turns out, is not weakness, it’s wisdom.
**Please note the silent treatment is something very different that has no place in an emotionally intelligent individual’s bandwidth. **
This scripturally endorsed silence is not withdrawal nor defeat.
It's more like a healing quiet.
Because sometimes the most powerful thing we can do isn’t to explain or defend, it’s simply to breathe, to rest and to let grace speak louder than we do.
