Mind Control
“For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” Matthew 12:34b
Did you know that you are a superhero? Your super power is mind control. You don’t need to wear a special costume to activate your super power, but if you do, please send photos.
You have control over what your heart dwells on. You have control over your own mindset and perspective. When you align your life with God’s truth, you can exercise the right that he’s given you to think and speak with authority over anything that challenges that alignment.
When a thought comes into our minds we can be tempted to accept it as true, especially if that thought aligns with one of our core beliefs. A core belief is the lens through which we see ourselves and can inform how we interact with the world around us. Oftentimes, a core belief develops in our early life, but it can continue to impact and inhibit us for our entire life if we let it. Consider this example:
Core belief: “I’m not good enough.”
Circumstance: You’re a busy mom, balancing work and childcare and you’re feeling overwhelmed with the cost of groceries every month, let alone the need to plan a healthy meal for dinner every night.
Thought: “This is too much to balance, and I’m failing my children.”
Let’s talk about what’s really going on here. At the root of this deception is a core belief about your worth as a human. Even though you have the head knowledge about your worth as a child of God, you continue to struggle with this lie about not being enough. For this reason, when a thought comes up in a time of stress or overwhelm, it can be tempting to lean into this deception further and believe that you are failing on every level.
Over time, this kind of belief and thinking can lead us into other temptations and sin. For example, our financial lack might lead us into greed. Our lustful thoughts might lead us into sexual immorality. Our desire for control might lead us into deception or manipulation.
These are thought patterns that have been built over time. We haven’t exercised our super power, and our minds are controlling us rather than the other way around.
Proverbs 4:23 tells us to “guard [our] heart, for it is the wellspring of life.”
This is why spending time in God’s word is so important. We remind our hearts and our minds what is actually true and where we need to ground our identity and the beliefs that we hold about ourselves. Super power activated.
